August 2016 Headlines:
- August 9th: A suicide bomber in Pakistan killed at least 70 people and wounded more than 100 on Monday in an attack on mourners gathered at a hospital in the southwestern city of Quetta, and Islamic State and a Taliban faction claimed responsibility.
- August 16th: According to the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) and other UN and international bodies, children are being smuggled, sexually abused, maimed, killed for their vital organs, recruited as soldiers or otherwise enslaved. Furthermore, 69 million children under five will die from mostly preventable causes, 167 million will live in poverty, and 263 million are out of school. In addition, it is estimated that at least 750 million women will have been married as children by 2030.
- August 25th: At 3.36am on August 24, a 6.2 magnitude earthquake wreaked havoc and destruction in central Italy. Not a single building has been spared, including schools and hospitals. The current death toll has now reached 247, in spite of 4,300 rescuers using heavy lifting equipment and their bare hands in a strenuous bid to find the last remaining survivors.
